Ndebele, Cele ‘omitted’

2008-01-30 00:00

Following the endorsement of Dr Zweli Mkhize to lead the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, his two fellow national executive committee members Premier S’bu Ndebele and Transport MEC Bheki Cele were omitted from the list, a Durban newspaper reported yesterday.

The ANC has not given thorough answers on this, but it appeared that Cele’s name was included then hastily removed from the list. Cele has often been billed as the front-runner for the top post, but his omission has come as surprise.

Mkhize’s riding of the crest wave was endorsed by the provincial ANC regions over the weekend and this has apparently indicated a snub for embattled Premier S’bu Ndebele. Ndebele has long been viewed as a Thabo Mbeki backer after endorsing his now-defunct third-term ambition.

For almost three years he has borne the wrath of the ANC supporters in KwaZulu-Natal.

The paper quoted ANC secretary Senzo Mchunu yesterday as saying party structures are talking about who they wanted to lead them, but that the process is still in an informal stage.

The others put forward include Mchunu as secretary, Siyabonga Cwele as deputy chairman, Sihle Zikalala as deputy secretary and SA Local Government Association’s Makhosi Khoza as treasurer.
