Ndwedwe villagers get lightning protection

2012-11-01 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube announced yesterday that a lightning conductor, covering a radius of 500 metres, would be installed at Maqokomela village near Ndwedwe.

The announcement came after two children died and two others escaped injury when they were struck by a bolt of lightning on Monday.

Grade 12 pupil Thandeka Dube (20) and her younger sister Fikisiwe (9) were on their way to shop with Thandeka’s one-year-old child, Aphiwe, and neighbour Sandile Khuzwayo (19) when the incident occurred.

Dube’s spokesperson Lennox Mabaso said the lightning conductor would protect a number of families and would be installed soon.

He added that it was not the first time the department had installed lightning conductors in communities as it had done so at schools as well.
