Neighbours unite to save Piggly Wiggly

Community members on the Midlands Meander saved a farm stall from flames on Thursday night after a fire broke out at the Piggly Wiggly Farm Stall in Lidgetton.

Neighbours armed with fire extinguishers were first on the scene to douse the flames. The owner of the shop, Rudi Kassier, was alerted at around 7.30 pm. The cause of the blaze is unknown and is under investigation.

About 50 people rushed to help extinguish the flames.

When the Howick and Mooi River fire departments arrived, the community members were already in action trying to stop the fire. About half of the farm stall was damaged, but there were no injuries.

Kassier was grateful for the help he received. “I would like to thank everyone for helping me save Piggly Wiggly. It was good to see everyone respond. Everyone is going through tough times in terms of the economy, but we as South Africans can still unite.”

Kassier said that the stall is still open for business.
