New Age: Editor quits

2011-06-01 00:00

HENRY Jeffreys, the editor of South Africa’s newest daily newspaper, The New Age (TNA), has resigned.

TNA is owned by the controversial Gupta brothers, who have close ties with the ANC and President Jacob Zuma. Jeffreys yesterday denied rumours that his resignation has anything to do with “political interference” by the newspaper’s owners.

He told Beeld that he has “personal things, like my masters degree and a book I am writing, to see to”.

“From the outset I was not planning to leave the Cape long-term.

“The newspaper was in crisis and needed someone to stabilise it and get it out on the streets. That was my main goal.”

He said he will sometimes help out in TNA’s Cape office and continue writing his weekly column.

Ryland Fisher, a media consultant, has been appointed acting editor.
