New Athens record, KZN clubs reminded to attend KZNA race organisers’ conferences in order to be sanctioned to hold road races

KENYAN Raymond Bett set a new event record for the original Athens Marathon, which was held from the plains of Marathon to the 1896 Athens Olympic Stadium, finishing at the weekend.

Bett finished in 2:11:35, almost a minute ahead of Paul Kosgie and Alex Kirui, who closed the podium in 2:12:26.

Consolater Yadaa edged Syitlana Stanko in a tightly-fought women’s race to take the title in 2:40:00.

Comrades Marathon was given a special award as the oldest ultra-marathon on the same weekend in Athens at the 30th Anniversary of the Association of Marathon and Distance Races (AIMS). The 90-km classic, which commenced in 1921, is the second oldest marathon event behind the SA Marathon on the African Continent and equals the second oldest in the world after Boston, which has been held 115 times, but tying with Yonkers and Kosice which have all held 87 editions.

As part of the Maritzburg Marathon weekend from February 21-24, AIMS will hold the first-ever Regional Conference, which will be a build-up and preparation for Comrades to host the World Conference in Durban in May 2014. Klipriver Striders were once again to the fore in the Newcastle Nite Race half marathon, held at the weekend with Sp-mandla Nyembe a clear winner in a time of 1:15:40, leaving second-placed Nhlanhla Khumalo almost two kilometres adrift. Bongani Ngobese from the Ozweni club was third in 1:21:23.

Pumelelo Mnyandu made the double for Klipriver club, taking the women’s race in 1:32:16 with a massive lead over Nedbanks Sibongele Sheli. Sheli crossed the line in 1:43:26, while Durban-based visitor Christine Bernard completed the podium three minutes later. The race was held in conjunction with the first of the KZNA race organisers’ conferences which attracted over 50 delegates.

Further conferences are to be held in Pietermaritzburg and Richards Bay over the next weeks, and clubs are reminded that only clubs attending the conference will be sanctioned to hold a road race in 2013. More details on this from KZNA office at 031 312 9374.

The feature race for the older runner this weekend is the Bluff veterans’ half-marathon from Fynnlands Sports Club. Grant Howes has more details of the event on 083 225 9815.

CMA, together with the local council and tourism departments, will host the next in the series of Edendale 10 km events. The race commences in the FNB Wadley Stadium and offers both a five kilometre and 10 km distance with the 10 km recognising performances of both runners and walkers. The main 10 km starts at 7:30 am while the five kilometre starts at 8:00 am. Thami Vilakazi has more details of the race on 083 413 9827.
