New Branch: ANC locks NFP cadres out of community hall

NATIONAL Freedom Party members in Durban’s Kennedy Road settlement launched their new branch on a pavement, under trees and guarded by police, after ANC members in the area allegedly locked them out of a community hall.

NFP organiser Bonga Nzuza told The Witness yesterday that on Sunday the party sent Nhlanhla Khawula, of its national working committee, to Kennedy Road to launch its first branch there.

He said ANC members there forbade their members to use the community hall and that the police were called in.

Khawula said the NFP had the municipality and the local councillor for permission to use the hall. They agreed.

Nzuza said they found the situation unacceptable. “The ANC members need to realise that we are in co-operation at the 19 hung municipalities. They have no say in our administrative and internal organisational matters.”

The thinking that the NFP would steal ANC supporters by launching a branch in that area belonged in the past. “They need to understand and respect the freedom of choice and association.”

The party would take the matter up with the ANC leaders. “If this is how the ruling party behaved in a democratic society, there is still a long way to go.”

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said the NFP had never raised the matter with it, “and we would not like to speak with them through the media”.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said: “A small group of NFP members got their message across and left without any reports of violence …”
