New KZN artisan training centre

2007-11-30 00:00

A brand-new multi-million rand Tooling Centre of Excellence was opened by KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Ina Cronjé at Durban’s Coastal Further Education and Training (FET) College yesterday.

The centre will be bigger and better than the other training centre currently running in the province and will make KZN a trendsetter in the arena of producing toolmakers.

According to the department, more than 700 engineers, along with more than 200 tooling companies, stand to benefit from the project.

Through the project, more than 20 pupils in the province have advanced towards level three on what will be a National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, which started at level two and will continue until level four.

The project was spearheaded by the Tool Association of SA (Tasa) in partnership with the departments of Education and of Finance and Economic Development.

Earlier in the year, Cronje said the project was a response to the critical need for trained artisans in South Africa.
