New M-Net soapie begins this week

2011-04-05 00:00

YOU’D be forgiven for thinking that Generations had moved across to M-Net last night if you tuned in at 6pm. The first broadcast of a new pay channel’s new soapie, titled The Wild, features three stars from the popular SA soapie, as well as a mix of the South African acting elite.

Connie and Shona Ferguson, SA television celebrity couple and Generations stars, are contracted to the new show alongside their old cast-mate Faye Peters, while Isidingo star and TV presenter Tumisho Masha is another popular face in the mix. The cast also includes, amongst others, SA screen veteran Ian Roberts, as well as Lele Ledwaba (Stokvel), Melusi Yeni (Tshisa), James Alexander (Binnelanders, Project Fame) and Nathaniel Ramabulana (Askies).

At the official launch on Sunday night at Johannesburg’s Monte Casino, the Fergusons hosted the screening of the first four episodes. The ambitious new soapie is shot entirely on location on various sites in the north of Gauteng.

The main backdrop to the story is a stretch of land that is home to a five-star game lodge, wherein all the ubiquitous soapie scandal unfolds between various families, who are all bound together through their relationship to the land.

“We’re planning to reinvent the [soapie] genre, building on the legacy of [our] soaps,” says M-Net’s Director of General Entertainment, Theo Erasmus. “Viewers will be able to experience modern, real-life stories in real-life weather conditions and surroundings.”

The production is shot in high definition under sunny South African skies, Erasmus says.

* The new half-hour soap screens Monday to Thursday at 6pm. Check the Weekend Witness this Saturday for more on this new SA show.
