New arts venue in city

2009-05-28 00:00

TWENTY-FIVE artists from Pietermaritzburg and the midlands are preparing to show their work at the City of Choice’s newest arts venue, Library House.

Situated at 173 Alexandra Road, the old Macs premises is home to both the Natal Society Library and the Destiny Coffee Shop. There is also space for artists in the large studio and work area, ideal for modelling and creative workshops, and space for exhibitions.

Among those making use of that space is Penny Forder who offers life drawing and beginner painter classes at the venue on Mondays, and the Wednesday group of independent artists who meet for support and feedback on art and the current work they are doing.

Forder is also the force behind the exhibition, titled Artists Without Boundaries, which is being staged from 8.30 am to 4 pm on May 29, and from 8.30 am to 2 pm on May 30 and May 31.

Asked why she decided to set up the event, she said: “There are many artists in Pietermaritzburg, unknown or with no venue to display their works. Library House offers that space.”

Among those exhibiting works, which will be on sale to the public, are Forder herself, Ann Raubenheimer, Carol Carroll and Moray Comrie.
