New deputy mayor nominated for national award

Newly appointed uMgungundlovu District Deputy Mayor Tu Zondi is one of the nominees for The Shoprite Checkers/SABC2 Woman of the Year Award competition.

Zondi (50), the mother of four boys, has been nominated in the Health Category for her work caring for HIV/Aids patients.

She is the co-founder and manages the day-to-day running of the Siyaphilisa Community Care Centre in Imbali.

She said she was nominated before she was appointed deputy mayor.

The centre, which houses HIV/Aids patients free of charge, was founded in 2001 and has since cared for over 500 patients. Zondi, who started as a caregiver while she was a ward councillor, said the establishment of the centre came about after she noticed that many Aids patients were left uncared for by their family members, who were either at work or at school.

Siyaphilisa Community Care Centre has, over the years, received backing from Absa Bank, which donated R300 000 to renovate the centre. Old Mutual has donated bedding. Zondi said Absa recently injected another R103 000, of which R40 000 went to purchase office equipment, while R63 000 paid the centre’s volunteers.

"I am happy that I was nominated. This demonstrates that people see what good I do for poor communities. The nomination would also help the centre to attract other people and businesses to support the centre so that it does not vanish," said Zondi.

Zondi heads the newly formed Local Aids Council, which will be overseeing the HIV/Aids strategies used by the municipalities under the uMgungundlovu District.

The nominees for the various categories will be profiled on SABC2 in July and the winners will be announced at a function in Cape Town on National Women’s Day, on August 9.
