New entrepreneur keen to expand battery outlet

A PIETERMARITZBURG man who became an entrepreneur after 33 years in employment is transforming the business he recently bought, placing it firmly on a growth path.

Having expanded Battery World in the Pietermaritzburg CBD, the aim of owners Tony and Evelyn Tweddle is to turn the business into a store that offers a range of power solutions.

The business has moved to bigger premises on 313 Hoosen Haffejee Street because the previous site offered limited space and parking.

The new 250 square metre outlet has new signage and branding.

“It offers bigger space with more parking in a better location,” Tweddle told The Witness.

He has already made progress in achieving his aim of establishing a power solutions store in the city.

Battery World supplies batteries and accessories for heavy vehicles, caravans and boats, cars and bakkies and the agricultural sector.

The latest addition to the product range is the “E-Bike”, which uses lithium or lead acid batteries.

Tweddle said, “Electric bicycles are the most energy-efficient means of transport available to man. Electric bicycles emit zero emissions while in use. Using current Eskom prices, a trip of 50 km on an E-Bike would cost just under 20c,” he says.

Tweddle, who worked at Telkom as a technical officer for 33 years, said the transition from employee to business owner has been “challenging but rewarding”.

“It’s about shifting your mindset and learning how to run a business after all those years of being employed. You have to be competitive and keep your pricing right while offering good quality customer service,” Tweddle said.
