Six new films open in town today: Charlie Wilson’s War, The Water Horse, Why Did I Get Married (CineCentre); Fools’ Gold (CineCentre and SterKinekor); Jodhaa Akbar and Good Luck Chuck (SterKinekor); while The Kite Runner joins the line up at Nu Metro.

Charlie Wilson’s War, scripted by Aaron (West Wing) Sorkin, is the outrageous true story of how one congressman who loved a good time, one Houston socialite who loved a good cause and one CIA agent who loved a good fight conspired to bring about the largest covert operation in history in Afghanistan. Three Oscar winners Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman star under the direction of veteran Mike (Primary Colours) Nichols.

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep is based on the novel by Dick King-Smith, author of Babe. Set in Scotland during World War 2 it follows the story of a young Angus (Alex Etel) who finds a mysterious egg on the shores of Loch Ness. When it hatches Angus find himself the guardian of a “water horse” which he names Crusoe. Keeping Crusoe a secret becomes more and more difficult the bigger he grows. The film also stars Emily Watson and Ben Chaplin and the digital effects are from the team behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy. By all accounts a fine “family” film.

Jodhaa Akbar is an epic drama on the grand scale from the director of Lagaan and Swades, Ashutosh Gowariker, and deals with the marriage of Emperor Akbar to Jodhaa, the daughter of King Bharmal of Amer. The marriage, initially a political alliance, turns to love and as a result the merging of two cultures, Hindu and Muslim, in sixteenth-century India. The film has not been without controversy in India but it’s a sumptuous visual feast combining action and romance starring Aishwarya Rai, Hrithik Roshan, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Suhasini Mulay, Sonu Sood and Ila Arun.

Fools Gold is a romantic comedy adventure that reteams Kate Hudson with Matthew McConaughey, last seen together in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Here they play a divorced couple who team up to find some sunken treasure. Along for the ride are co-stars Donald Sutherland, Ewen Bremner and Ray Winstone.

Why Did I Get Married stars Tyler Perry (who also wrote produced and directed), the man behind the hit Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Here he takes a similar comedy approach spliced with a Christian-based morality and turns his focus on marriage. Four couples, guided by a psychiatrist (played by Janet Jackson), take a closer look at their relationships. Also stars Malik Yoba, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones and Tasha Jones.

Good Luck Chuck features standup comedian Dane Cook in a romantic comedy about a successful dentist who is irrestible to women because after they dump him they are guaranteed to meet their true love — a situation that suits him until he falls in love. Also stars Jessica Alba and Dan Fogler.
