THE much-anticipated South African films, Spud and Liefling , open in Pietermaritzburg this week, along with the suspense thriller, The American, and the Bollywood epic, K helein Hum Jee Jaan Sey .

Spud: The Movie, which opened yesterday is based on John van de Ruit’s popular novel and tells the story of the trials and tribulations of a 14-year-old boy in his first year at boarding school. The film is classy, definitely worth seeing and boasts a star in the making in young Troye Sivan, who plays the title role.

The musical, Liefling , which takes its name from one of the most famous Afrikaans songs, Gé Korsten’s Liefling , uses a host of South African hits from the seventies to today, to tell the story of Liefling Marais, a girl with a passion for life, and her relationship with handsome Jan Ferreira.

Thanks to spoilt rich girl, Melanie von Staden, however, the path of true love doesn’t run smooth.

George Clooney stars in the suspense thriller The American , which was adapted for the big screen from Martin Booth’s 1990 novel A Very Private Gentleman.

Clooney plays an assassin, Jack, who, after doing a job in Sweden, retreats to the Italian countryside where he takes an assignment to construct a weapon for a mysterious contact, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten).

Savouring the peace of the mountains of Abruzzo, Jack accepts the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and pursues a torrid liaison with the beautiful Clara (Violante Placido). But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may also be tempting fate.

Last, but by no means least, movie fans can see the Hindi period film, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, and starring Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone.

Based on the book Do And Die by Manini Chatterjee, it tells the story of the Chittagong uprising of 1930 during which 64 people, including Surjya Sen, a school teacher by profession, took on the might of the British Raj.

Still on circuit: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1; Red; Life As We Know It; Unstoppable and Faster.
