EDENDALE establishments have welcomed the opening of the new fire station there.

Edendale Mall spokesperson Tasmia Dayaram said at the opening ceremony on Friday that it was marvellous for the community.

“We have foot traffic of over 500 000 people per month at the mall,” she said.“Imagine if a fire or any dangerous situation was to occur.

“We welcome the fire station here and they will also help us with training in other aspects of safety ... such as evacuation plans and fire drills.”

Her colleague, Thobeka Zimu added that Edendale was developing rapidly. “It’s almost becoming its own little town.

“We have people calling us constantly, wanting to develop the area ... wanting to add a gym and cinema.

“There’s a lot more to come to Edendale.”

The CEO of Edendale Hospital, Z. Ndwandwe said: “On a number of occasions, when we have had a potentially disastrous situation, like smoke coming up from nowhere, or a fire has started in a particular ward, the Msunduzi Municipality fire fighters have always responded promptly and managed the fire away.

“We have 900 beds at our hospital which have to be kept safe at all times. We are very grateful to the Fire Department.”

Mayor Chris Ndlela said the station belonged to the community.

He appealed to Ward 22’s councillor, Patrick Jaca, to emphasise this to the community, so that they look after it and take ownership of it.

“This fire station will go a long way in providing service delivery,” he said.
