New joBerg2c race category for individuals

2011-08-15 00:00

SCOTTBURGH stands to benefit from a change to South Africa’s longest mountain bike race, following the announcement by the organisers of the nine-day long Old Mutual joBerg2c race of a special non-racing solo category.

In a departure from the first two editions, next year’s event, which runs from April 27 to May 5, will accommodate a limited field of individual riders, said organiser Craig Wapnick.

The 910 km event, which is the longest paired stage race in South Africa, takes riders from Heidelberg in Gauteng, across the Free State, over Spioenkop (also known as “the Great Wall, my china”), in the foothills of the Drakensberg down to Scottburgh on the East Coast.

“We’ve had a lot of requests from international riders, media representatives and people in small towns who struggle to find suitable partners to commit to the challenge,” said Wapnick, adding that individual riders need not fear riding without a partner in case of mechanical or medical problems.

“Thanks to our easily accessible route and off-road rescue support, solo riders will have good back-up and assistance if needed,” he said.

He said every rider will be monitored throughout the journey and there will be regular checkpoints along the route.

The new category will allow more participants to experience the camaraderie of the event.

“The riding might be solo but the atmosphere of the event encourages them to meet, mix and mingle,” he said.

The website advises the entry fee is R12 300 per rider or R24 600 per team of two including VAT.

“For our foreign entrants this equates approximately to £1 200, $2 000, €1 400 per rider.”

The entry fee includes three meals a day and tented accommodation (one tent per team) from the night of day one to day eight. It does not include accommodation on the night before or the night after the event.

It does not include breakfast on day one or lunch on day nine.

We also welcome teams of three riders — R36 900 including VAT.
