New look for funnyman

2012-02-11 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL’S funniest man, Sifiso Nene, has ditched his trademark dreadlocks to prepare for a role in an up-coming comedy movie to be screened by Mzansi Magic.

Nene won the SABC’s reality show So You Think You’re Funny in 2009 and clinched the title of being the funniest man in South Africa.

Speaking to Weekend Witness, Nene said this year his focus will be on acting. He has finished shooting the comedy movie Taxi Ride that he said everyone will enjoy.

Nene said cutting his dreadlocks was a very emotional experience after sporting them for more than five years.

“This is my new look. It’s a new start for the new Sifiso,” said Nene laughing.

“The new me will be appearing on TV soon, but not just once. I will be on TV most of the time acting in comedy movies, not Generations. Fans will enjoy the movie as I play the part of a typical taxi driver from KwaZulu-Natal that always carries a sjambok at the taxi rank,” said Nene.

He said his background is in acting and he has starred in stage plays. His acting talents were also required during the So you think you’re funny show where there were scenes which required some acting.

“Acting in this movie has motivated me to focus more on acting in comedy movies,” said Nene.

Taxi Ride is about the life of every day South Africans that use public transport. The movie is directed by comedian David Kau.

Nene said the movie is full of fun and life as it features comedians like Skhumba, Chris Mapane, DJ Franky and Khuli Roberts.

And as a plus for parents, there is no vulgar or offensive language and it can be enjoyed by the whole family.

When Nene was asked whether he chose to play the role of taxi driver named Bhakabhaka, the answer was no. Previously Nene was in hot water after making a joke on Ukhozi Fm’s breakfast show about taxi drivers. They threatened to march to the SABC but radio personality Linda Sibiya apologised on behalf of Nene.
