New pharmacy course

THE South Africa’s Pharmacy Council (SAPC) announced the approval of the new tertiary-level training for Pharmacy Technician Diploma to bridge the skills gap in South Africa.

The announcement was made during the three-day annual Clicks Pharmacy Conference which was held at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Conference Convention, Durban.

This move aimed at addressing the chronic shortage of pharmacy skills in the country’s public and private sectors, according to Mojo Mokoena, manager of continuous professional development and registration for the Pharmacy Council.

Mokoena said the new cadre of “pharmacy technician” would be trained and registered with the SAPC mid 2014 after undergoing six months of internship.

More than 400 pharmacists, their assistants and nursing practitioners, from across the country, attended the three-day long convention.

“Many of South Africa’s and other African countries’ pharmacists are working abroad where they have been enticed with big financial packages,” said Mokoena.

Mokoena said, “The new pharmacy technician is intended to bridge the skills gap and this will upgrade skills and open new opportunities for people to enter the profession.”

The training of pharmacist technicians would be offered to school-leavers who have completed grade 12 with mathematical literacy, and will be open to pharmacy assistants.
