New pier to open soon

2010-12-17 00:00

THE Hibiscus Coast Municipality (HCM) in conjunction with South Coast Tourism will officially open the newly revamped Margate fishing pier and raise the Blue Flag for six beaches on Sunday.

This ceremony will take place at the Margate fishing pier amphitheatre. It will be led by Hibiscus Coast Mayor Nolwazi Shusha who will cut the ceremonial ribbon to mark its opening.

The HCM recently completed the restoration of the Margate fishing pier, an icon of tourism in the town, which was damaged by the floods of 2007.

The restoration project cost about R4,1 million, of which the Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department contributed a large amount.

The pier is located to the south of Margate main beach, off shore from Marine Drive, and was constructed entirely on top of rock bed. It is one of Margate’s most popular fishing spots and tourist attractions, particularly during the shad and sardine festivals.

The main focus will be the awarding of Blue Flag status to Margate, Ramsgate, Marina, Trafalgar, Umzumbe and Lucien beaches.

A fishing competition will be held on the pier and a prize will be awarded to the fisherman who catches the first fish after the official opening.
