New romcom and a family film for the holidays

2010-06-11 00:00

ACADEMY Award winner Vanessa Redgrave stars alongside Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia), Christopher Egan (Eragon), Gael García Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries) and Franco Nero (Die Hard 2), in the romantic comedy, Letters to Juliet, which opens at CineCentre in Pietermaritzburg today.

The film, which is directed by Gary Winick (Charlotte’s Web, 13 Going on 30), tells the story of Sophie Hall (Seyfried), an aspiring magazine writer, who, with her boyfriend Victor (Bernal), heads to Italy for some much-needed romance.

While Victor is off tending to business, Sophia finds herself in the famous Verona courtyard of the star-crossed lover Juliet Capulet, of Romeo and Juliet, where women from all over the world leave letters of love lost and hoped for. It’s here that she discovers a 50-year-old letter written to Juliet by Claire Smith (Redgrave), who is searching for a young Italian who romanced her as a teen.

To Sophie’s surprise, a letter she writes inspires Claire, now a grandmother, to travel to Verona in search of her long-lost love (Nero).

Also new at CineCentre this weekend is the family-friendly film, Marmaduke, based on the cartoon strip of the same name. Starring William H. Macy and with the voice talents of Owen Wilson and George Lopez, the film tells the story of Marmaduke, the super-sized dog that never fits in.

Now living large in Orange County, California, he is helping his family make the transition from the Midwest to The O.C. But he’s also discovering that fitting in with his new four-legged friends isn’t always easy for a 90-kilogram teenage dog. Luckily for Marmaduke, he doesn’t have to go it alone because he always has his best pal, Carlos, a Russian Blue Cat, watching his back.
