New slant on Handel's ‘Messiah'

2007-11-13 00:00

THIS year sees the 144th performance of Handel's Messiah in the city, in an unbroken tradition. But there are going to be changes for the 2007 Messiah.

The Pietermaritzburg Amateur Music Society (Pams), which has been involved with the oratorio for the past 10 years, has realised that, with the general social changes in the city since 1994, the way Messiah is presented also has to change.

This year, the venue moves away from the City Hall to the Cathedral of the Holy Nativity and, from the musical point of view, the emphasis will be on the part of the oratorio that deals with the Nativity of Christ. A small number of the choruses from other sections of the work, and the Amen will also be included.

Robin Walton will conduct, and the choir will be accompanied by the Pams orchestra, augmented with guest performers. The performance will be at 3 pm on Sunday, November 25 and tickets, available at the door, will be R45.

Pams hope to perform the parts of Messiah that deal with the Passion and Resurrection during Eastertide next year, and welcome comments on the changes. For more information, phone 033 346 0449.
