New sponsor lined up for Sharks

2010-11-06 00:00

THE Sharks will announce their new sponsor “in the near future” and have no plans at this stage to move across the road from their present headquarters at King’s Park to the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban.

Banking giant Absa, who owned the naming rights at King’s Park, withdrew their backing last month.

However, Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl said yesterday that a new sponsor had already been lined up and “an announcement would be made in the near future”.

Van Zyl was reacting to an article in a Durban daily newspaper yesterday, which quoted SA Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins as saying the Sharks would, at some point, have to move to the Mabhida Stadium.

Hoskins was also quoted as saying that the King’s Park Stadium had started to deteriorate.

Van Zyl said he had spoken to Hoskins about the article. “He told me he had been misquoted and that all he had said was that the Sharks could not be expected to move to the Moses Mabhida stadium if this hurt them financially.”

Van Zyl denied that the King’s Park structure was deteriorating.

“Before every big game we have an inspection and get a certificate from construction engineers. Maintenance is on-going and, in fact, a R600 000 painting job has just been completed on the main grandstand,” he said.

The Sharks CEO said discussions with eThekwini Municipality were ongoing “but we have no plans to move to the Moses Mabhida stadium at this stage”.
