New twist in Ezemvelo gold card saga

2012-02-15 00:00

THE Midmar Mile entrance fee saga has taken a new twist.

This after an irate visitor said she had to pay to enter Midmar despite having received an e-mail from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife assuring her that it had reached an agreement with the Midmar Mile race organisers to allow Golden Rhino card holders in free of charge.

The message in the January e-mail was contrary to what appeared on the wildlife authority’s website at the weekend.

The website said the two parties had in fact decided that card holders should not enjoy free access. The conflicting e-mail and website messages from Ezemvelo have left the race organisers baffled.

“We had nothing to do with that e-mail,” said race director Wayne Riddin.

He explained the race organisers had no say or interest on the gate fees, as all the money earned at the entrance gates went to Midmar dam went to the wildlife organisation.

“We do not make a cent out of it.”

Riddin pointed out that he had to hire the resort from Ezemvelo for the weekend and that he personally had to take out public liability over the hiring fee.

“In the 21 years that I have been doing this job we have never had this problem.

“Why is it coming up now?” he asked.

Ezemvelo spokesperson Waheeda Peters confirmed that the e-mail had been sent to card holders, but she would not comment further.

She could not say what the weekend gate earnings had been.

Port Shepstone resident Leila Edwards, who received Ezemvelo’s e-mail, said: “I find it strange that Ezemvelo would make this agreement and then go back on it.”
