New way to treat wounds

2013-07-23 00:00

CAPE TOWN — A new and unique wound dressing made by sterile nano particles is now on sale in South Africa.

The dressing is packaged in powder form that is sprinkled thickly over a wound. When a few drops of sterile saline solution are added, the powder coalesces and moulds to the exact shape of the wound. The mould forms a flexible dressing that can be kept in place for 30 days.

The very tiny particles let in oxygen, but totally cover the wounded tissue against infection.

The manufacturers Altrazeal told sister paper Die Burger the dressing was not a cure-all, as wounds covered with it still had to be checked for infection. The powder also worked best on wounds that are not infected as the powder contains no anti-microbial elements, but serves as a buffer to prevent microbes from entering the wound.

One dressing costs about R200. It is painless to apply and when the dressing is removed, it does not tear off new tissue. Altrazeal stated the nano-particle wound dressing was ideal for diabetic sores, trauma wounds, sores, some burns, wounds that are not healing and areas from which skin was removed for transplants.
