Newby: SA’s first mini-mule in Howick

2012-10-25 00:00

BORN on Yellowwood farm in Howick on October 3, Pluto, South Africa’s first miniature mule, runs like he’s preparing for a race.

Having notched up just three weeks in the world the long-eared mule keeps other animals at his home farm busy. “He is very sweet and playful,” said Sandra Murphy, his owner.

His mother, Toffee, is a miniature horse and his father, Jupiter, a miniature donkey.

Murphy said it was exciting to have Pluto on the farm, adding that he was the subject of a lot of interest from other animal lovers like herself.

Murphy and her partner, Cecil Hackney, have other animals which include four miniature horses, three miniature donkeys, a miniature goat and pigs.

But the other animals have nothing on Pluto, who is already showing signs of being a strong contender as a racer.

“He loves running; he runs like a horse. He runs like he is preparing for the Durban July,” laughed Murphy.

Although it is clear that young Pluto has taken after his mother when it comes to running, it is not yet clear whether the mule brays or neighs.

“It will be interesting to hear what sound he makes.

“We haven’t heard him yet,” said Murphy.
