2010-05-07 00:00

THE Witness was a runner-up, and editorial staffer Matthew le Cordeur a finalist, at this year’s Mondi Shanduka Awards held at Soccer City in Johannesburg on Monday night.

The Witness, which has won the McCall Trophy for design, layout and quality of printing no fewer than five times since 2002, was this year named runner-up to its sister paper Volksblad in Bloemfontein. The award is for newspapers with a circulation of 50 000 or less.

Media24 newspapers took top honours at the Newspaper Association of SA’s annual Frewin, McCall and Joel Mervis awards, which recognise newspaper excellence in advertising, printing, layout and typography.

The other two newspaper trophies were also won by Media24 titles. Die Burger in Cape Town won the Frewin Award for bigger urban daily papers. The runner-up was Beeld. Naweek Beeld won the Joel Mervis Award for urban weekly newspapers, with City Press, also a Media24 newspaper, the runner-up.
