Next closing date for Midmar Mile entries coming up soon

2008-11-24 00:00

THE next closing date is looming, and the list of events that open- water enthusiasts can use to post seeding times for the 36th Halfway Telkom Midmar Mile has increased dramatically with the Swim Challenge Series as official qualifiers.

The Swim Challenge Series, Swimming South Africa’s open-water swimming flagship, has traditionally been the official seeding event for this world-famous event.

This will mean that all participants who have competed in the Bela Bela, Klerksdorp Dam, Maselspoort and Chelmsford Dam events will be included in the Midmar Mile database, as will the details of the Ashanti Dam, Midmar Dam, Homestead Dam and Marina Martinique events.

Meanwhile, with the next closing date on Wednesday, December 3, the organisers are encouraging entrants to get their entries in to beat the next fee increase.

Entries for the seeding swim at the Erfenis Dam Mile taking place in the Free State on Saturday are encouraging, with many enthusiasts looking forward to participating in some of the cleanest water in the area.

This event doubles as a multi-event race, with entrants able to do a triathlon, biathlon, run or even mountain bike race.

The Emerald Challenge in Vanderbijlpark on Sunday has become renowned for its excellent organisation and high standard of safety, and continues to attract members of the growing open-water swimming fraternity.

The contact is Gaylene Campbell of Four D Marketing Solutions at 011 807 3596 or 011 234 7860.

The events move to KwaZulu-Natal for December.

The Albert Falls Challenge is to be held on Sunday, December 7, and the KZN Championships at Midmar Dam on Sunday, December 21.

Online entries for these events are available at

While both events include the required 1 km seeding distances, the Albert Falls race includes a 10 km distance and the Midmar Dam event includes a 5 km distance.

The final opportunies for seeding will be on Sunday, January 18, with the Blue Fins Swim Challenge at Maselspoort Resort near Bloemfontein

In Gauteng, the Lake Heritage swim event has been upgraded to a water festival taking place over two days.

On the Saturday, a 3 km and 5 km event has been added to the usual 1 200m events which will take place on the Sunday.

Entrants participating at these events do not have to worry about the seeding times for the Midmar Mile as these are automatically updated in the database due to the new Mr Price timing chip.

All inquiries can be made through the Midmar Mile office at 033 341 0790.

Online entries for the last four events ahead of the Midmar Mile are set to be operating soon.

Swimmers should note that no other events have been included as seeding events this summer except those advertised on the Midmar Mile website,
