Ngubane looks to add experience in Thanda side

PROMOTION hopefuls Thanda Royal Zulu are leaving no stone unturned as the battle for a place in the National First Division play-offs intensifies.

Coach Mlungisi “Professor” Ngubane’s side currently lead the Coastal Stream with 28 points from 13 matches.

This is after they thumped Nathi Lions 2-0 in Richards Bay at the weekend, with goals from former Orlando Pirates striker Phumudzo Manenzhe and former junior international Khumbulani Mdluli in the second half.

Thanda are closely followed by Bay United, who have 25 points from the same number of games.

There are eight games left before the end of season.

Ngubane revealed that he is keen to bring in experienced defender Sphiwe Mkhonza and midfielder Nhlanhla Zwane, who are among seven players put on transfer by AmaZulu coach Manqoba Mngqithi recently.

However, Ngubane said it appears the duo are not keen to join a First Division club, hence he has turned to striker Sandile “Sgubhu” Gumede, who was also transfer listed by Usuthu.

“By bringing these players, I want to strengthen my team in all departments because we are at the half-way mark now,” said Ngubane.

“Should anything happen to my players, I know I have enough cover,” added.

Ngubane’s charges visit Bay United in a huge match for the Coastal Stream in Port Elizabeth next Saturday.

Interestingly, Thanda last lost a match to David Bright’s charges before notching up six successive victories.

Since relocating to Richards Bay last year, Thanda look a completely different side, with the management having reportedly become more professional in handling internal matters.

Massive bonuses introduced for players have lifted the morale and confidence in the camp.

Meanwhile, it is a three-horse race in the Inland Stream as Black Leopards, Jomo Cosmos and University of Pretoria have amassed 22 points, with Cosmos — relegated from the PSL last season — having the slight advantage of a game in hand.
