Ngubane wins on marathon’s new course

Mr Price’s Enoch Ngubane and Collegians Harriers Kerry Koen were the inaugural winners over the new course for the annual Pam Golding MTN Cavanagh Marathon.

Ngubane took the lead from three kilometres into the new scenic 52-km route that circumnavigates Wagendrift Dam, opening a three minute advantage that he maintained through to the finish below the dam wall. Although never far adrift, B.E. Thusi, in the colours of Toyota, never looked to endanger the lead.

Koen was a clear winner in the women’s race in 4:11:23, with Westville’s Rentia Denissen out-running many of her younger colleagues to finish second in 4:28:31.

Samuel Pazanga and Mr Price’s Sandile Lembethe were the only athletes left in contention as the Mount Edgecombe Villagers half marathon tackled the steep hills of Stonebridge between 15 and 18 km. The Formula One athlete prised himself clear of Lembethe towards the finish, crossing the line with a 100 metre advantage in 68 minutes 20 seconds.

It was plain sailing for Jenna Challenor who won the women’s race by over three kilometres, taking the tape in 82:33 and dipping under the KZN selection criteria by 27 seconds.
