Night golf hits Maritzburg

2009-04-24 00:00

FOR the average golfer, sunshine and clear skies are sometimes not enough to keep the ball on the straight and narrow, so next Friday’s night golf event at Victoria Country Club will certainly not be for the faint-hearted.

“I’m pretty sure that it is a first for Maritzburg, although it has been done by a few clubs down the coast,” club professional Stuart Woodroffe told the Weekend Witness recently.

The concept has been a hit with corporate clients the world over and now locals will be able to see what the fuss is about.

“We just wanted to bring something new for our patrons, and we will be having five of these nights at the start of each month.”

With Nike Golf coming on board as a sponsor, the front 10 at Victoria is set to be a blur of fluorescent balls and glow-in-the-dark sticks.

Explaining the process, Woodroffe said that there will be glow sticks on the tee boxes, in the fairway and on the green.

The cup itself will have a glow disc, to give those that navigate their way to the green a target.

The balls to be used are specialised night balls, which glow for 10 minutes every time they are hit.

Woodroffe suggested that it would be easier to find the odd slice and pull, as the ball should glow — even in the rough.

The format on Friday will be foursomes, with each pair playing alternate shots.

Due to the logistics, the field has been limited to just 68 players for Friday night.

There will be prizes on offer after the night’s fun but, for many, the novelty of shouting Fore! into the Maritzburg night should be interesting enough.

The fees for each golfer have been devised thus:

• R90 green fees for 10 holes.

• R60 competition fee.

• R50 deposit for each glow-in-the-dark ball, which is refundable on return.

With entries limited to just 68, all those interested are urged to contact the Pro Shop at Victoria at 033 347 1394.
