Nivea awards Durbanite

DURBAN-based self-taught artist, Bheki Khambule, has won the Start: The Nivea Art Award for 2008, receiving R20 000 cash at the awards ceremony held on Tuesday night at the KZNSA Gallery, Durban.

Second place (R10 000) went to Pietermaritzburg Master’s student Natalie Fossey, and third (R5 000) to Mizuikyise Ndlela of Howick. As the winner, Khambule automatically qualifies for a solo exhibition at KZNSA’s Nivea Gallery next year.

The Start exhibition, which runs until August 2 at the KZNSA Gallery, showcases for sale the final competition artworks of the finalists, selected from 280 entries received from throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

Khambule has managed to notch up several achievements, including selling one of his paintings to former minister Ben Ngubane in 2003 at a Decorex Show at the ICC Durban, despite having had no formal training. He won his first competition while in Grade 9 at Hlamvana High School, and in April 2000 was chosen to represent South Africa in New Zealand at a Youth Entrepreneurship conference where he spent two weeks in Christchurch.

He says he will use the prize money to invest in his business, Vulindlela Art & Design, to buy art materials. He is also going to put some aside into his savings, as his dream is to buy his mother a home one day.
