Nkandla: MP gives new breakdown of building costs

2013-03-20 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Spending of several million rands per building on upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla estate was revealed in Parliament yesterday.

For the third week in a row, Democratic Alliance MP Anchen Dreyer produced information about the contractors.

ANC MPs expressed their displeasure when Speaker Max Sisulu told them to give Dreyer a chance to speak.

She said at least six buildings had been built at a cost of R7,5 million each since 2010, for a total of R45 million.

This after Zuma had assured Parliament that besides his private residence, the government had not built any other buildings.

“The government has actually spent nearly R110 million on various buildings for his security personnel,” said Dreyer.

The contractors were:

• Bonelena Construction, which received a contract to build 25 buildings for R61,6 million, but did not complete the work.

• Moneymine contractors were asked to take over the contract and completed it at a cost of R65 million. The same firm then got another contract for six more buildings at a cost of almost R45 million.

Dreyer said the new information proved that Zuma was enriching himself at the expense of the poor and unemployed.

A date has not yet been set for the tabling in Parliament of the promised report on the Nkandla development by Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi.
