No Spring Day cooling off

2011-09-02 00:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality yesterday once again disappointed the residents who looked forward to a cool swim on Spring Day, as only one municipal pool was open and the rest are firmly closed, despite the thirty-degree heat in the city.

A concerned resident, who wished not to be named said, “The municipality has for years been disappointing in opening swimming on September 1, despite the exorbitant rates that we pay to this Council.”

He said it was the same thing last year and residents had to use private swimming pools because the municipal pools were closed.

He said this totally unacceptable because they had enough time in winter months to prepare for the opening of these pools. “People that always bare the brunt of this burden are people from the historically disadvantaged communities and I do not know whether the message from the municipality is that they do not care about them,” he said.

He said the municipality needs to be able to prioritise accordingly if residents are to take them seriously.

Msunduzi Msunduzi spokesperson, Brian Zuma said only the swimming pool at Buchanan Street is operating at the moment. “The Sobantu and Eastwood pools might be open from next week because at the moment they are currently being cleaned and should be finished soon,” he said.

Zuma said the Alexandra swimming pool is currently undergoing some repairs but should be fully operational by the end of September.

The Olympia swimming pool in Northdale was vandalized so the department of parks and recreation is currently repairing it, he said.

“We acknowledge the delay that has caused the opening of swimming pools however they will be available for entertainment and cooling down the members of the public during the summer heat,” added Zuma.
