No arrests in murder of angler

2008-07-11 00:00

Police have made no arrests for the murder of Zululand angler Clive Hunter, but a task team has been dispatched following leads, they said yesterday.

Hunter (35) was fatally shot on Alkantstrand beach, one of Richards Bay’s main beaches, on Tuesday, after he had been fishing at the Pipeline with his wife Zelda.

This was within days of an attack on the same beach last weekend, where another fisherman was robbed at knife point.

Hunter died when he confronted four men, while shouting to his wife to run to safety.

The killers walked away with only a tackle box worth about R60.

The fishing community have vowed not to let the murder go unnoticed.

The Zululand Shore Angling Association, of which Hunter was vice president, said they are busy drawing up a memorandum that they plan to give to relevant government officials and the national police commissioner, pleading for action on the growing number of beach murders.

Association president Clinton Woodley said these attacks increased after the government banned vehicles from beaches in 2002, meaning that anglers cannot easily escape if confronted.

Over 2 000 anglers are expected to attend Hunter’s memorial service at 11.30 am tomorrow, on the beach where Hunter died.
