No bail for Vikesh in murder trial

2014-10-09 00:00

THE man accused of murdering Pietermaritzburg woman Saras Govender (57) was refused bail yesterday.

Vikesh Harripersad (27), who was a tenant in Govender’s home, is charged with strangling her after she allegedly banned him from her Rajput Road property for failing to pay rent.

Govender, who was single and had no children, was found dead with her hands and feet bound.

A cloth was allegedly found around her neck and a pillow covered her face.

The investigating officer, Sergeant Sheldon Norman, who opposed bail for the accused, testified that he feared that if released, Harripersad would flee as he has no fixed home or assets. He was also concerned that he would interfere with state witnesses in the case, who are his girlfriend and other family members.

Magistrate Ntsoaki Ndawonde yesterday said the court was not convinced that it was in the interests of justice to grant him bail and ordered that he remain in custody.

The case was adjourned to November 24.
