No change: Madiba’s family in the dark about seeing him

2012-12-24 00:00

NELSON Mandela’s grandson Mandla was in the dark yesterday about plans to spend Christmas with the former president.

Mandla said they were unsure whether festivities would be held at home or in hospital, where Mandela has been convalescing for more than two weeks. “I don’t know of any plans for the family to celebrate with him.

“Everything depends on his doctors, whether they discharge him or he will be in hospital, but we know that he is responding well to his treatment.

“There is nothing more I can add at this stage,” said Mandla, who is chief of the Mvezo Traditional Council near Qunu, where Mandela has a home.

Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj said there were no new updates on Mandela’s condition. “[There is] nothing new, we issued a statement on Saturday about his condition, no new update,” said Maharaj.

The statement had said Mandela was responding to treatment. Mandela (94) was diagnosed with a lung infection and also underwent gallstone surgery. His current stay in hospital is his longest since he was freed over two decades ago.

Mandela has a history of lung problems, having suffered from tuberculosis in prison.
