No christmas lights for the city as Msunduzi counts its pennies

2010-12-09 00:00

IT seems the Grinch has decided to pay Pietermaritzburg a visit this year, after it was decided there will be no Christmas decorations in the city streets for the festive season.

Msunduzi acting manager for marketing and public relations Brian Zuma said: “It would be a cost-saving measure as the annual cost of festive lighting is estimated to be R380 000. No budget was allocated for this function.”

Zuma said the municipality used to light up the entire city by December 1 on any given year.

The deadline has passed for this year, but residents who might want like to assist the municipality in this regard are more than welcome to do so, Zuma said.

The municipality also decided against celebratory decorations to commemorate Diwali and Eid.

On top of this, it seems the city’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony will not take place this year.

“… with no funds for the electricity department to erect the 17 piece metal tree, it seems that this function will not take place,” said Zuma.
