No date for IFP, NFP peace talks

2011-08-19 00:00

THE call by Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi for talks to normalise relations between the IFP and the National Freedom Party was not prompted by recent political killings in KwaZulu-Natal, said IFP acting national chair Bhekisisa Mthethwa.

The IFP president made the call for talks during a thanksgiving rally held at KwaMashu Hostel at the weekend.

In an interview with The Witness yesterday, Mthethwa said Buthlezi proposed that he should initiate talks with the NFP as early as June this year “but I had to postpone approaching the NFP after the passing away of Magwaza-Msibi’s mother”.

“What prompted Prince Buthelezi to propose talks to normalise relations … was in fact the songs insulting the IFP leader that are sung by NFP supporters … The president felt those songs had the potential to cause conflict in the near future as it has happened.”

Mthethwa said he had exchanged correspondence with NFP leaders about the the date for the talks, but none has been set. NFP spokesperson Zanele Cele confirmed the IFP had sent correspondence.
