No flyhalf backup for James

2008-08-03 00:00

Quite what will happen if flyhalf Butch James takes a knock during Saturday’s one-off Test against Argentina on Saturday is a mystery after Bok coach Peter de Villiers yesterday sent utility backs Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn back to the Sharks.

De Villiers now has no specialist back-up for James in his revised 24-man squad. Peter Grant has already gone home with an injury and Pienaar and Steyn, who have both played flyhalf for the Boks, will now both be available for the Sharks against Western Province this weekend.

Either Adrian Jacobs or Percy Montgomery, at a push, could take over from James, but it has left the Bok coach critically short of options.

Centre Jaque Fourie, scrumhalf Fourie du Preez, also back from injury, and wing Jongi Nokwe are the three players who did not tour recently with the Boks.

Prop Gurthro Steenkamp and Sharks wing Odwa Ndungane have also been released.

The three injured players from the Australasian Tests, Bryan Habana, Adi Jacobs and Schalk Burger, have been included in the squad.

The squad

Conrad Jantjes, Percy Montgomery, JP Pietersen, Bryan Habana, Jongi Nokwe, Jean de Villiers, Adi Jacobs, Jaque Fourie, Butch James, Ricky January, Fourie du Preez.

Pierre Spies, Joe van Niekerk, Schalk Burger, Juan Smith, Luke Watson, Bakkies Botha, Victor Matfield, Andries Bekker, Bismarck du Plessis, Adriaan Strauss, CJ van der Linde, Tendai Mtwarira, Brian Mujati.
