No horsing around: Dundee’s traditional races

2011-07-16 00:00

Action at the Dundee traditional horse races. This year’s event takes place next Saturday, July 23, with teams from eight districts — uMzinyathi, Amajuba, Ugu, uThungulu, and uMgungundlovu, Sisonke, Uthukela and Zululand — participating. The racing is sponsored by the Sports and Recreation Department and its corporate partners, such as Gold Circle, who provide support for horse owners and jockeys, most of whom are unemployed. Last year saw the piloting of betting at the race for the first time. The event has also seen the introduction of harness racing, where a horse pulls a cart. Fashion shows have also added to the glamour and this year after the race, there will be a concert with Professor, DJ Tira, Maskanda and other local artists. The racing starts at 10 am at the Dundee horse riding track, which is near the airfield.
