No info on Royal Household projects

2013-07-23 00:00

THE absence of any infrastructure projects to be carried out by the Public Works Department on behalf of the Royal Household raised eyebrows in a portfolio committee in the KZN Legislature.

This follows the report listing expenditure on infrastructure programmes of various departments that was tabled before the committee.

The report showed how much has been spent to date in the infrastructure budgets of the various departments.

Inkosi Ngamizizwe Madlala found it puzzling that there was no allocation for infrastructure for the Royal Household.

“It is for our kingdom. We can’t keep quiet when we see something that is not palatable,” he said.

However, committee chairperson Mbali Fraser said the question could be better answered by the portfolio committee that does oversight on the Premier and Royal Household departments.

Another committee member, Busi Mohlaka, complained that Fraser was being “diplomatic” in attempting to divert the matter, so as not to expose the failure by the Royal Household to submit projects to the Public Works Department, which acted as an implementing agent.

Fraser, however, pointed out that requests are not necessarily submitted to Public Works.

“It might happen that the Royal Household Department under the Premier’s Department decided not to build in this financial year,” she said, adding she would not allow the meeting to apportion the blame on the absence of infrastructure projects from the Royal Household.

Public Works Department operations manager Thulani Mdadane said as far as they knew, no projects had been referred to them by the Royal Household and it was possible that another implementing agent had been hired.

The Royal Household could not be reached for comment to clarify the issue.
