No one opposes Maimane

CAPE TOWN — The DA will on Thursday appoint its first new parliamentary leader with a unanimous vote.

The party’s national spokesperson, Mmusi Maimane, was the only candidate nominated for the parliamentary leadership post.

The post of deputy chief whip is meanwhile being contested. James Selfe, chairperson of the DA’s federal executive council, yesterday confirmed that Anchen Dreyer, one of the DA’s three federal chairs, has been nominated as caucus chair, and Richard Majola as deputy chairperson.

Several MPs have been nominated for the 10 posts in the whippery.

Elza van Lingen was nominated as DA leader in the National Council of Provinces. Two senior MPs, Sandy Kalyan and Mike Waters, were nominated for the post of deputy chief whip.

Kalyan, an MP from KZN, recently drew sharp criticism for her tweets on a South African woman who allegedly smothered her three disabled children in the UK.

She later withdrew her remarks.

Maimane is expected to appoint John Steenhuisen, also from KZN, as chief whip.

Asked why he thought the DA only nominated one candidate to lead the party in Parliament despite having the most members in caucus in the party’s history, Selfe explained that many MPs were new, as is Maimane. He said it would take an exceptional person to lead as a newcomer. “Maimane is an exceptional leader.”
