No photos’ drama

2013-08-09 00:00

DRAMA erupted yesterday when photographers attempted to photograph the seven men accused of kidnapping Underberg businessman Mohsin Patel (25) recently.

The accused appeared in the Himeville Magistrate’s Court.

Two of the accused — police flying squad members Jasandra Supal of Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg, and Sizwe Nhlanhla Mkhize of Mpophomeni, Howick — were granted bail of R1 000 each during an earlier court appearance.

Still to apply for bail at the next court appearance scheduled for August 13 are Pakistani nationals Khalik Amin, Atif “Chima” Nasim, Sikander Akther, Nadeem Akhder and Nasir Ali.

Although photographers had been given the green light to take photographs in the courtroom by the presiding magistrate, the defence vigorously objected.

The accused subsequently covered their faces to avoid being in the limelight.

They face charges in connection with the alleged abduction of Patel, who was held in captivity for 22 days, by people he reportedly believed to be business rivals.

Patel was subsequently found in the early hours of July 23, chained to a bed in a room in Port Shepstone.
