‘No rhino trophy for Perot’

2009-11-07 00:00

DURBAN — On the eve of an attempt to track down a white rhino that may have been wounded by the son of an American business tycoon three months ago, KwaZulu-Natal conservation authorities insist he is not entitled to the trophy.

In a letter to the KwaZulu-Natal conservation service, Ezemvelo, a Pietemaritzburg lawyer, Pat Dewes, says Ross Perot Jr believes that since he paid for a white rhino trophy, he is entitled to receive one.

According to Ezemvelo spokesman Jeff Gaisford, Ross Perot Jr shot at a white rhino bull, possibly wounding it.

The animal stormed off into the bush, but game rangers could find no trace of a wounded rhino or a carcase in a search after the hunt.

Game rangers will still look for the rhino, but Ross Perot Jr will not receive the trophy if they find an injured animal.
