No water meter, then a bill for R17?000

2010-08-31 00:00

A MAN from Unit J in Imbali has vented his frustration with Msunduzi Municipality, because they allege he owes them R17 000 for water consumption.

Bonginkosi Mbanjwa who lives with his wife and three children told The Witness how the municipality presented him with a hefty bill when he does not even have a water meter.

“I reported my problem long ago when Zanele Hlatshwayo was still a mayor; however, my water meter is still dysfunctional and nobody from the municipality has heeded my call for help,” said Mbanjwa.

He said the only thing the municipality ever did was send some of their workers to come and dig a hole and that was the last time he saw them.

He said, “What frustrates me even more is that I don’t get monthly statements, but all of a sudden I get this.”

He said even if the municipality is using the estimation criteria to charge him, he does not know how they can do that because his neighbour also has no water meter.

“I think the municipality is trying to recover their financial woes caused by their corrupt senior officials by cheating us ratepayers,” said Mbanjwa.

Brian Zuma, acting executive: marketing and public relations management in the Msunduzi Municipality said he had referred the issue to Rakesh Lutchman, who is responsible for handling such cases. “He will investigate and offer assistance to Mbanjwa, based on the findings on this matter,” said Zuma.
