CHRISTMAS brings joy as families and friends exchange gifts and best wishes. Some are lucky enough to receive the greatest gifts of all in the form of babies.

Three local public hospitals delivered 41 babies at Christmas, all healthy,

The first Christmas baby was Noel Ngubane, born at at 12.25 am at Northdale Hospital. He weighed 3,2 kg.

His mother, Thembekile Ngubane (23) of Emkhambathini, said she was overjoyed by this special gift.

“He is so special to me and I will forever remember this day. What makes him special is the fact that he is sharing a birthday with Jesus Christ the Saviour,” she added.

The hospital gave Ngubane a baby hamper.

There were smaller hampers for the babies born after him.

Edendale Hospital recorded 18 births on Christmas day. Another four babies were delivered at Grey’s Hospital.

The Sunday Tribune reported that 251 Christmas babies were born across the country.

A baby was born dead to one unlucky mother.

A nurse who spoke on condition of anonymity said such deaths are “sometimes caused by high blood pressure and sometimes infections. In this case the former may be the cause because the mother was 38 years old.”

She said the cause will be known after a postmortem is conducted.
