Nominees challenged in two ANC wards

2011-03-25 00:00

WITH the deadline for the submission of candidates to contest the May 18 local government elections today, two ANC wards in Pietemaritzburg, ward 13 and ward 29, were holding elections for different purposes last night.

Ward 29 residents — which comprises Copesville, Haniville and surrounding areas — were conducting elections to nominate an independent candidate.

Ward 13, made up of France, Slangspruit, Nyamazane and other areas, was having an ANC candidate nomination re-run.

A source in ward 29 said the majority of residents were rejecting the ANC nominee, Thandi Ndlovu, and were planning to field their own candidate, who is believed to be Penelope Ndlovu. The ward meeting was being held at Haniville hall.

In ward 13 ANC candidate hopefuls Skhumbuzo Hadebe and Bongani Dlomo were battling it out after many of the ward’s residents rejected the ANC’s list, which named Hadebe as its candidate.

Today is the last day for submission of candidates’ names to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

All eyes will turn to the IEC list to check which candidates are standing as independents, following the outcry in different parts of the province over the ANC’s nomination process.

Chief electoral officer Pansy Tlakula said municipal officers had been receiving lists since Tuesday.

“The IEC appreciates the fact that parties and independent candidates have started earlier than in any other election to submit their lists and deposits,” she said.
