Non-profit group steps in to clean up parks in PMB

GROWING Parks is a new organisation that aims to clean up Pietermaritzburg’s parks.

Co-ordinator Farhana Vally said the organisation aims to adopt parks around the city, clean them up and create a safe, clean environment for children.

Growing Parks has already started with the clean-up of the Settlers Park near Grey’s Hospital.

Vally said the idea for the organisation was born five years ago, and after completing all the bureaucratic processes it was finally launched this month. It will work with the Msunduzi Municipality parks department.

“The organisation has five employees, three of whom are responsible for cleaning the parks.

We have adopted one park, Settler’s Park, and have started cleaning it up,” Vally said.

She said Growing Parks hopes eventually to be partly responsible for all the parks around the city.

“We are a non-profit organisation that relies mostly on fundraising to do this task of cleaning up,” she added.

Sergie Naidoo of the Msunduzi parks department said the initiative is the first of its kind in the city.

“This will not just benefit the youngsters but it will also benefit the city as a whole,” he added.
