Northdale: body found at ‘crime hotspot’

2011-03-31 00:00

THE body of a woman estimated to be 30 years old was discovered lying in the bushes near the Northdale sports grounds on Tuesday morning.

The woman was described as black, tall, of slender build, fair in complexion and with short black hair. She was clad in a black top, red skirt and a pair of brown sandals. A blue scarf was found nearby. No personal items belonging to the victim were found.

She was discovered in an overgrown area with tall grass and vegetation next to the Northdale Stadium. The area is used as shortcut to cross to the man road but some residents describe it as a haven for criminals.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the body was discovered by a domestic worker. She said it is possible the woman was killed more than four days ago, to judge from the state of decomposition.

The woman had sustained a stab wound to her chest. There is a possibility that she was raped.

Community members who declined to be named said the poor maintenance of the area has turned it into a criminal hotspot. “The area has become very dangerous as the criminals have taken it over,” said a community member.

“The area is so overgrown that criminals can easily hide out there. This is not the first time that something like this has happened.”

Jeevan called on anyone who might have information about the incident or the identity of the victim to contact Colonel Chris Wiles at Mountain Rise police station at 033 387 9622 or 079 500 1306.
