Northdale couple hijacked with their sons

2009-06-23 00:00

A NORTHDALE father and his family were left traumatised when they were all kidnapped at gunpoint this weekend, from the driveway of a relative.

On Saturday, Naidu (police had not released his full name at the time of going to print), his wife, and three sons (aged 10, 16, and 20-years-old) had visited family in Balhambra Way, Northdale.

On their departure, the five of them together with nephews, aged 6 and 11, were about to climb into their silver Hyundai Tucson, when they were suddenly confronted by three adult males in the driveway.

One was armed with a firearm, another had a knife.

Naidu was held on the ground at knife point, while the suspect with the firearm forced the rest of the family into the vehicle.

After Naidu was ordered into the vehicle, the three suspects entered the car.

At gunpoint, Naidu’s 20-year-old son was told to drive.

They proceeded towards Mount View over the railway track where the suspects ordered him to stop the vehicle.

One of the suspects took over the driving and proceeded towards Imbali.

As the vehicle approached the Imbali turn-off, they came across a road block manned by traffic officials.

The suspect driving the vehicle drove through the roadblock, resulting in a high speed chase through Imbali with traffic officers in pursuit.

The vehicle eventually drove into a ditch and came to a standstill. At that point, all three suspects jumped out and fled in different directions.

During their ordeal, Naidu and his family were robbed of their cellphones and jewellery.

Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact Detective Inspector Bheki Langa of the Mountain Rise Detective Service on 033 387 9614 or 082 529 2175. — WR.
