Northdale death still a mystery

2011-08-19 00:00

THE KZN Health Department is still waiting for a report from specialists to pin down what caused Thulisile Nene’s death after she had carried a dead foetus for two weeks.

Nene died at Northdale Hospital while waiting to deliver her baby on Monday evening.

Her husband, Vincent Ngidi, told The Witness that his wife was in “much pain and was refused an operation”.

Health spokesperson Chris Maxon said, “It’s the policy of the department to allow for natural delivery of the foetus even in cases when the foetus is dead.

“However, in this case, and at the request of the patient, the mother was given medication to induce delivery.”

Maxon said the induced delivery “was successful”.

However, the placenta “didn’t come out” and Nene was returned to theatre.

Nene underwent labour 14 days after she was admitted to hospital.

“The patient received more than optimal care, but her rare condition was a cause of her pain. The family was counselled on two occasions about the case and will feel the husband’s loss,” Maxon added.

However, Ngidi said he received no counselling — only a “runaround” from doctors and the rest of the Northdale staff.

“I can’t believe that the hospital took my wife on our two-year wedding anniversary,” Ngidi added.

The family fear they might be forced to postpone the funeral that is set for Saturday because the two bodies are still undergoing post-mortem examinations.

“Any death in our facility is regretted, especially when a death happens during pregnancy or at birth,” the Health Department added.
